🔐 Trezor.io/Start | Starting® Up® Your® Device®
Welcome to the official onboarding guide for your Trezor® hardware wallet. This document will walk you through the safe, secure setup of your device using https://trezor.io/start
. If you're new to crypto, don’t worry — we’ve got your back!
🔍 What Is Trezor?
Trezor is a hardware wallet — a physical device that securely stores your cryptocurrency’s private keys offline. Unlike software wallets, which are connected to the internet, Trezor keeps your credentials in a secure chip that never exposes them to online threats.
- 🛡️ Keeps your crypto keys offline
- 📦 Ships with built-in security features
- 🔐 Only signs transactions physically, not virtually
📦 Step 1: Unbox & Inspect
Inside your package, ensure you received:
- ✅ Trezor device (Model One or T)
- ✅ USB cable (USB-C or micro USB)
- ✅ 2x recovery seed backup cards
- ✅ Stickers and welcome guide
- ✅ Holographic security seal (intact)
⚠️ If the seal is broken or missing, stop! Contact Trezor support immediately. Do NOT proceed with setup.
🌐 Step 2: Go to trezor.io/start
Always type the address manually. Never trust links from emails, ads, or messages. The official site will allow you to:
- Select your model
- Download the official Trezor Suite software
- Verify instructions and safety warnings
💡 Pro tip: Bookmark the official site for future access.
💾 Step 3: Install Trezor Suite
The Trezor Suite is the desktop app used to interface with your hardware wallet. It lets you manage assets, check balances, and approve transactions safely.
- Download for your OS (Windows, macOS, Linux)
- Install and open the application
- Plug in your Trezor device
🧠 Step 4: Initialize Device & Create Wallet
You’ll be prompted to install firmware and generate a wallet. The device will then display your recovery seed — a unique list of 12, 18, or 24 words.
⚠️ Never take a photo or screenshot of your recovery seed. Never enter it on a phone or computer. Write it down on the provided card and store it offline.
🔢 Step 5: Set a PIN
Your device will ask you to create a PIN. This protects the device from physical access. If lost or stolen, an attacker cannot unlock it without the correct code.
- Use at least 6 digits
- Avoid patterns like
123456
or 000000
- Store your PIN securely
🔐 Step 6: Enable Passphrase (Optional)
This advanced feature adds an extra “25th word” to your seed. It enables hidden wallets, which are only accessible when the correct passphrase is entered.
🧠 If you forget the passphrase, you cannot recover the wallet — even with the seed. Use with caution.
💸 Step 7: Add Coins
Now you can add and manage cryptocurrencies. Trezor Suite supports:
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Litecoin (LTC)
- ERC-20 tokens
- +1000 other assets
Each account must be confirmed on the device for maximum security.
📖 Step 8: Learn the Interface
Trezor Suite allows you to:
- View portfolio overview
- Label and organize accounts
- Send/receive securely (always verify addresses on the device)
- Use built-in swaps and exchanges
🛠️ Step 9: Maintain Device Health
- 🔄 Update firmware regularly
- 🌐 Use Tor mode for network privacy (in Suite settings)
- 🔒 Use passphrase for plausible deniability wallets
- 💬 Enable labeling (optional Dropbox sync)
